About the Opportunity
We are partnering with a leading organisation responsible for the delivery and management of critical water infrastructure and public utility services. They are seeking a highly experienced Chief Water Utilities Engineer to provide strategic leadership across water systems, asset management, and infrastructure development.
This is a key leadership role, offering the opportunity to shape long-term utility strategy, drive operational excellence, and oversee essential public infrastructure.
The Role
The Chief Water Utilities Engineer will take responsibility for the strategic planning, operation, and continuous improvement of water and wastewater systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant service delivery.
You will oversee major infrastructure projects, lead multidisciplinary teams, and ensure alignment with regulatory standards, organisational objectives, and long-term asset management plans.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic oversight of water supply, treatment, wastewater, and distribution systems
- Lead the development and implementation of asset management and capital investment programmes
- Oversee the design, delivery, and maintenance of critical infrastructure projects
- Ensure full compliance with regulatory, environmental, and public health standards
- Develop and enforce engineering standards, policies, and operational procedures
- Manage and mentor engineering teams, fostering high performance and accountability
- Act as a key liaison with government authorities, regulators, contractors, and consultants
- Monitor system performance, risk, and resilience, implementing continuous improvements
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and long-term infrastructure planning
Candidate Requirements
- Degree in Civil, Environmental, or Water Engineering (or equivalent)
- Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent) strongly preferred
- Extensive experience in water utilities, public infrastructure, or municipal services
- Proven track record managing large-scale water or wastewater systems
- Strong understanding of:
- Regulatory frameworks
- Asset lifecycle management
- Infrastructure planning and delivery
- Demonstrated leadership experience within complex engineering environments
- Ability to engage with senior stakeholders, regulators, and government bodies
- Strong commercial and strategic decision-making skills
- Senior leadership role within a high-impact infrastructure environment
